Update on THE BATMAN's Targeted Release Date

Warner Bros. has been taking its time with The Batman under the direction of Matt Reeves. There's still a lot we don't know about this movie, but it is widely expected that Ben Affleck won't reprise the title role, and a younger actor will be cast instead. The studio never set a release date, but Reeves has shared his hope to start shooting in the spring or summer of next year. This led to fans expecting a 2020 date. Well, looks like it will be longer than that.

Our friend Mario from Revenge of the Fans is back with a new report on The Batman. According to his sources, the movie is looking at a 2021 release date. However, it could be even later than that. Why? Well, the studio is taking all the time needed to perfect the script before production. They want it to be the best movie it can be, and they are not concerned about hitting a specific release date.

Warner Bros. came under fire for rushing Suicide Squad and Justice League throughout production, so to hear that they're taking time with The Batman is good news. Sure, it's easy to want a movie sooner than later, but if extra time results in a higher-quality product, then that isn't bad at all.

Also, this news comes as WB seems to be committed to releasing two movies a year, rather than fans' desires for at least three. The studio is releasing Shazam! and Joker next year, and then Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020. So, it's easy to see The Batman bumped to DC's 2021 slate instead, joining The Flash.

In other news, Mario shares something that could have happened for The Batman, but didn't. Apparently, Ben Affleck and some executives within Warner Bros. shared interest in bringing Affleck back as Batman, and they approached Matt Reeves about it. Specifically, they pitched bookend scenes set in the present day (ala Wonder Woman), with Affleck in those scenes and a new actor as the younger Batman. Ultimately, however, Reeves turned the idea down and committed to a story just about younger Batman. So, it would've been a cool idea, but one that isn't happening.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
