ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Shrinks the Competition with $75.8 Million Opening Weekend

Marvel Studios’ winning streak continues this weekend with its third movie of the year and 20th overall, Ant-Man and The Wasp. The sequel has been earning positive reviews from fans and critics so far, while it has been on track for a solid opening. Now, we have the initial estimates.

Per Box Office Mojo, Ant-Man and The Wasp opened with $75.8 million this weekend, easily winning the top spot. While that’s a good number – it’s nearly $20 million more than the first Ant-Man‘s opening – this is one of the lowest MCU openings. In fact, it’s one of only five movies to open to less than $80 million. It’s also behind more recent tracking, which put it in $85 million+ territory.

Overseas, Ant-Man and The Wasp opened with $85.9 million, bringing its worldwide total to $161.7 million. The film is infamously being scheduled to come out much later in certain territories, including the UK. It will be interesting to see how its numbers will grow after this.

However, it’s important to consider that Ant-Man and The Wasp‘s production budget is $162 million, one of the lowest for recent MCU titles. I mean, its worldwide opening alone almost covers the budget completely. So, the film is going to do fine at the box office. Not everything has to make Black Panther or Infinity War money, and that’s OK.

Stay tuned for more box office updates as we have them.
