Joaquin Phoenix Addresses Possibility of Playing The Joker

Over the years, Joaquin Phoenix has been attached to many different comic book movie roles. The Academy Award nominated actor has been rumored to play everyone from Doctor Strange to Lex Luthor to Bruce Banner. Currently, Phoenix is said to be in negotiations to star in Warner Bros.’ Joker origin film, directed by Todd Phillips and possibly produced by Martin Scorsese. Now, the actor has addressed the potential for the role, as well as joining the superhero genre.

In an interview with Fandango, Phoenix refuses to confirm or deny whether he’s playing Joker. He simply says that he could be an “interesting” character to play.

With Phoenix’s history of turning down comic book roles, it’s easy to assume that he’s just not interested in the genre. However, you’d be mistaken. Phoenix explains that he’s definitely open to doing any movie regardless of genre. He just has to be sold on the character and the director. “If you have the ability to transcend the genre, then that’s what you want to do. So I wouldn’t say, hands down, no – I wouldn’t do that kind of movie. There are things where I’ve flirted with the possibility where there was the potential for this to be… something that’s actually interesting to me. But then for whatever reason they never got to that place where everyone else feels the same way. And that’s key. Everyone has to want to explore the same thing or else it just doesn’t f**king work. I’m not opposed to it. I don’t make decisions on budget or things like that – it’s really the filmmaker and the character.”

So, Phoenix certainly sounds open to joining the comic book movie genre, whether it’s as The Joker or another character. Hopefully, he’ll find the right role down the line, if this one isn’t it.

The untitled Joker movie is expected to begin production sometime this year. The film, which is part of DC’s non-canon banner, will allegedly depict Joker as a failed comedian, akin to The Killing Joke.
