Krypton Series Premiere Review

Set two generations before the destruction of Superman’s home planet, KRYPTON follows Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), the legendary Man of Steel’s grandfather – whose House of El was ostracized and shamed. With Krypton’s leadership in disarray, Seg-El encounters Earthly time-traveler Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) who warns he’s under the clock to save his beloved world from chaos. Fighting to redeem his family’s honor and protect the ones he loves, Seg is also faced with a life and death conflict – save his home planet or let it be destroyed in order to restore the fate of his future grandson.
Hello everyone! It’s little old me, and I’m here to talk about the series premiere of Krypton! This is a spoiler-free review, so feel free to read below with no fear!
First I’d like to talk about the visuals. We don’t get to see a whole lot of the planet Krypton in any tv/movie setting. So there isn’t really a basis to go off of, except from what is in the comics. That gave the team behind Krypton a lot of freedom to create a planet almost from scratch. And I think they did fantastic. The luster is subtle, but it works for the time, and it doesn’t look terrible. And the Krypton underground is something I don’t think we’ve ever seen before, so it was intriguing to see something that looked similar to the Star Wars Coruscant lower levels. The sets don’t look cheap, and that’s a good thing.
The costumes of the lower, unranked Kryptonians look more like Earth clothes; leather, jeans, t-shirt type looking stuff. The ranked Kryptonians costumes look almost directly out of what we’ve seen from the comics, tv, and movies. Everything looks extraordinary and well put together. Nothing really looks out of place.
Now let’s get to what you really want to talk about – the episode!
I think this was a very intriguing take on a prequel to Superman. I’ve seen every season of Smallville, and I’ve watched some of Gotham, so I know good prequels and bad prequels. (Sorry not sorry Gotham fans) Seeing Seg-El though is intriguing, because it is very weird to see a story about a character and its background, but not have that character in the show. The writers make the connection using Adam Strange, a time traveler from Earth during the age of Superman.
Seeing the various houses of Krypton is a great premise, and definitely helps build a background for who Superman’s grandparents, and theoretically who his parents grow up to be.  I’m a background person, so I enjoy these types of shows. I’m hopeful to where the rest of the show can go, and I’m excited to see the Braniac character in more depth. The makeup and special effects from the brief time we’ve seen him look so realistic and comic accurate. I’m super duper excited to see the next episode.
