BLACK PANTHER Projections Soar Past $160 Million for Opening Weekend

The hype for Black Panther keeps going higher and higher. The Marvel Studios movie originally began tracking for a $100-120 million opening weekend, before increasing to $150 million. Now, with the film out this week, the latest projection is bigger than ever.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Black Panther is now tracking to make at least $165 million over the four-day weekend, a massive number even for Marvel. Only four Marvel movies have passed this figure in their opening weekends – Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, and both Avengers films. It would also give Black Panther the biggest February opening of all time.

If Black Panther has a bigger opening weekend than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million), it could crack the Top 10 biggest openings in history, and the top five for superhero movies. And, with the film receiving rave reviews so far, the numbers could keep going higher. Stay tuned.

Black Panther is scheduled to hit theaters on February 16th. The 18th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. Ryan Coogler directs from a script that he co-wrote with Joe Robert Cole.
