Rumor: John Cena Among Frontrunners to Play DC’s SHAZAM

This summer, DC Films set New Line’s Shazam as the next installment of the DC Extended Universe. The film is expected to begin production in February. David F. Sandberg is directing from a script by Henry Gayden. Recently, pre-production began, with a wide range of young actors being sought to screentest for the Billy Batson role.

Now, we may know of two actors in contention for the Shazam role. According to That Hashtag Show, John Cena and Joshua Sasse are the two tentative frontrunners to star in Shazam. Apparently, there was also a third contender who dropped out, but the name of the actor is unknown.

Sasse is best known for his role on Galavant. Meanwhile, Cena is one of the world’s most prominent internet memes wrestling icons, but he has been expanding his acting credentials in recent years, including Paramount’s upcoming Bumblebee movie.

That Hashtag Show also received a Shazam working synopsis, as well as a character breakdown for Billy Batson. These run down the character’s powers and origin story, as seen in the comics; however, it suggests that New Line is seeking an actor in the 12-15 age range to play Billy.

With actors now being considered for Shazam, expect casting news to be announced soon. Stay tuned.

Shazam is expected to hit theaters in 2019.
