Jennifer Lawrence Explains Why She's Returning for X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX

Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique was one of the most prominent characters in the X-Men prequel trilogy, exploring her evolution from an ally of Charles Xavier to a sort-of enemy to the leader of the X-Men. Lawrence’s three-film contract ran up with Apocalypse last year, but she and the trilogy’s other three stars – James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult – signed on for another sequel, Dark Phoenix.

Lawrence could’ve decided to move on from the franchise after her contract ended, but she decided to stick around for at least one more movie. Why? In an interview with Digital Spy, the Oscar winner explains. “My contract was up, I didn’t have to do another one, but if I didn’t do another one, what would her story be? I felt like I owed it to the fans, and I owed it to the character to follow her journey, to be fair to the movies, and not be like, ‘I don’t want to do another X-Men!’ And then I just never show up and everyone’s very confused about the Mystique they’ve been following for the last three films.”

So, basically, Lawrence wanted Mystique’s story to continue and not be suddenly abandoned just for the sake of it. That’s totally fair.

Stay tuned for more as we have it.
