Jared Leto Shares His Thoughts on Warner Bros.’ Joker Movie Plans

This summer, Warner Bros. put two Joker-related movie projects in development. The first is an origin story that’s separate from the DC Extended Universe; rather, it’s set in its own continuity as part of a new Elseworlds banner. The second movie is a Joker/Harley Quinn spinoff from Suicide Squad, starring Jared Leto and Margot Robbie. With two different Jokers appearing on the big screen at the same time, it’s possible that some audiences could be confused.

Well, if you are, then you’re not alone. Leto recently spoke with ODE (via Batman-News), and he admits that he has some confusion about the Joker plans too. “I’m a little confused too. Yeah, there are a couple of things happening in the DC world.”

A recent report claimed that Leto wasn’t very fond of a standalone Joker movie. However, in this interview, the Oscar winner affirms that the character is more than the actor who plays him, and there’s room for multiple actors to get a shot. “I love the Joker. He’s a great character and really fun character to play. But it’s a big universe and when you play the Joker, there’s no ownership there. You have the honor of holding the baton for a little while and then passing it off. There are other films that are in development and I’m excited to see what comes from them.”

The Joker movie will be directed and co-written by Todd Phillips, with Martin Scorsese in talks to produce. It was recently reported that WB wants Leonardo DiCaprio to star, but considering the actor’s avoidance of comic book movies, that’s most likely not happening. Meanwhile, the Joker/Harley movie will be written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, and it is a separate project from Gotham City Sirens.
