Geoff Johns Talks Expanding Batman’s Side of the DC Extended Universe

Batman plays a key role in DC Films’ team-up movies, and he will soon headline his own film. But beyond that, Warner Bros. has put movies starring Nightwing and Batgirl into development. Not to mention the Batman villains that play key roles in the Suicide Squad and Gotham City Sirens movies. And now, we have confirmation of DC’s plans to expand the Batman world beyond Batman.

Appearing on IGN Live (via ScreenRant), DC Films’ Geoff Johns talked about how they wanted to bring Batman’s world to the big screen, in a way we haven’t seen before: We haven’t gone out there and said what our slate is and that’s because we’ll do it when we’re ready and we have the films that we’re excited about. But for Batman, what I will say is that Batman is more than just Batman and, you know, it’s been way too long since we’ve seen an expansion of that universe, and Batgirl – we are doing Batgirl with Joss Whedon, it’s going to be super exciting. He’s going to start that next year, and that’s just the start.

Johns went on to talk about the direction Matt Reeves will take Batman solo outing: We want to explore the Batman universe in a very big new way and Matt Reeves is coming on to do Batman now, and we don’t want to do the same thing that has been done before. We want to build it out just like we built it out in the comics.

The DC Universe continues to grow, and it looks like The Bat-Family will be a big part of that. We’re bound to hear more news on upcoming DCEU projects very soon. Like always, stay tuned.
