David Ayer Explains Why He’s Directing GOTHAM CITY SIRENS Instead of SUICIDE SQUAD 2

Hot off the heels of Suicide Squad‘s success last year, Warner Bros. began developing ways to expand the franchise. One of those ways is Gotham City Sirens, which is expected to see Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn team up with Poison Ivy and Catwoman. Squad director David Ayer is helming this spin-off, rather than returning for the direct sequel. Why is that?

Speaking with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con, Ayer explains why he is directing Gotham City Sirens. “It’s a story about three fantastic women who’re trying to find their way in the world, and realize that they have more power together than they do individually. I have daughters, and I want to create something that might be able to help them get along in the world a little bit.”

Harley Quinn is known for multiple wardrobe changes, from her jester outfit to her New 52 look to Suicide Squad. When asked if the character will switch it up in Sirens, Ayer simply says, “Let’s put a pin in that. Maybe next Comic-Con. Everybody evolves.”

So far, few other details are known for Gotham City Sirens. With Suicide Squad 2 aiming to begin production next year, it may be a little while before we see Harley join forces with her fellow Sirens. Maybe we’ll hear some updates at Warner Bros.’ SDCC panel tomorrow. Stay tuned.
