WONDER WOMAN Grosses a Strong $103 Million in Opening Weekend

DC Films’ Wonder Woman was always expected to be a box office hit, as tracking expectations have gone higher and higher over the weeks leading up to release. The latest installment of the DC Extended Universe was originally expected to make $65-75 million in its opening weekend in North America, and this week, it went up to $95 million. The movie has also benefited from overwhelmingly positive reviews by both critics and the general audience; something that past DCEU entries didn’t have.

Now, Wonder Woman has surpassed even the highest expectations. Per Gitesh Pandya, the superhero film has grossed about $103.3 million in its opening weekend, easily winning the top spot. This marks the biggest opening ever for a female director, as well as a female-led superhero movie. This also serves as the third largest opening of 2017 so far, next to Beauty and the Beast ($174.8M) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146.5M). Overseas, Wonder Woman grossed an additional $125 million. This brings its worldwide opening to $228.1 million.

Wonder Woman marks a huge win for not just the DCEU, but the superhero genre as a whole. There have only been a handful of female-led films in the past, and all of them were critical and commercial failures. But Wonder Woman‘s success tells people that, yes, female superhero movies can work. And not only can they work, they can make big money. Additionally, we hope that this will lead to more female directors being hired for big tentpole films.

Stay tuned for more box office updates as we have them.
