Patty Jenkins Not Signed on for WONDER WOMAN Sequel…Yet

Wonder Woman opened this past weekend with a big $103.3 million gross, and the film has been earning rave reviews from both critics and audiences. So, you would expect Warner Bros. to get a sequel on the fast track ASAP. Star Gal Gadot has a sequel in her contract, but as of this writing, director Patty Jenkins has yet to sign on.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jenkins only signed on for one Wonder Woman movie; a standard practice for directors who are making a big budget tentpole for the first time. So, the studio will have to negotiate a new deal with Jenkins for a second movie.

Fortunately, WB intends to begin negotiations soon, and with Wonder Woman being such a big hit, that will give Jenkins and her reps plenty of leverage in the deal-making process. THR adds that the deal, should it close, would also see Jenkins and Geoff Johns work on a Wonder Woman 2 script treatment, and possibly other DC movies too.

Additionally, sources tell THR that WB decided to wait on Wonder Woman‘s opening weekend numbers before putting a sequel into development and negotiating with Jenkins. The studio had apparently been focused on prepping Justice League Dark and Joss Whedon’s Batgirl as the next DC movies to go into production. How those plans would be affected by Wonder Woman 2 are to be determined.

So, basically, Jenkins directing Wonder Woman 2 isn’t a done deal just yet, but don’t be surprised if a contract comes together shortly. After all, Jenkins delivered by far the most universally loved DCEU project, and it would be shocking if WB didn’t pursue her for more movies.

Stay tuned for more updates as we have them. Wonder Woman is in theaters now.
