Review: INJUSTICE 2 – Every Battle Defines You

After NetherRealm’s hit game Injustice: Gods Among Us, we’ve waited four years for a follow-up game. Injustice takes us to the crappiest earth in the multiverse; the Justice League is broken and Superman rules the world. It was a fascinating look at DC’s Universe – what if Superman went bad? The gameplay was also excellent, making players feel as if they really were these super-powered beings. With that said, I was worried Injustice 2 wouldn’t live up to expectations. Adding new characters to the roster, killing fan favorites in the comic tie-ins, and adding a controversial gear system, it all made me really nervous. Well, I’m happy to say that not only does Injustice 2 live up to is predecessor; it’s superior almost in every way.

The story starts out on Krypton. Here we see Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) having to leave the planet with her cousin Kal-El (Superman). Brainiac is destroying the planet and wants every Kryptonian in the universe dead. Fast forward to present day, and we see the world trying to get back to normal after the fall of the Regime. Supergirl is now on earth and is being taken care of by Wonder Woman and Black Adam. With Brainiac now making his way to earth, can the Regime and Insurgency put their differences aside to save the world? Will they have to let Superman out of prison to help stop the alien invasion? That’s the heart of the story. It’s engaging and I wish it was a little bit longer. I wouldn’t say it’s better than the first, but the story in Injustice 1 was incredible. Seeing the messed up world have to put back the pieces of what was once the DC Universe will always be entertaining. Some of the battles don’t make any sense [two characters fight for literally no reason], but you get things like that in a fighting game. That and being a tad too short are my only  complaints.

The fighting is fantastic. Each character has their own unique move set [unless it’s a premiere skin Flash/Reverse Flash etc], and they all feel really smooth. You’ll have your favorites, but every single character is fun in their own right. The gear system is what puts this game over the top. The more you play the more loot you get. Each piece of armor, each new gun, each new shader makes you play longer and harder. I spent hours trying to get the right hat for Green Arrow, the perfect emblem for Supergirl, and the white shader for Black Canary. These things aren’t just cosmetic, they all make you stronger. Each mother box (crates with new gear) gets you one step ahead of your opponent. This also makes them customizable – it’s addictive. You can play online all day and won’t find a Batman that looks like you, or fights like you.  This is where you go to the Multiverse; a place where you go to different earths to fight against new threats. You’ll most of your gear in the multiverse, so make sure you head there as much as possible. Every battle defines you and you’ll love every second of it – until you run into someone online who’s maxed out and they completely destroy you. But I digress…

Guys, Injustice 2 is everything you wanted and then some. The story mode is great, the gameplay is fantastic and modes like the multiverse and online play make it all the more exciting. The gear system is just the cherry on to of an already excellent game. It’s definitely a must buy.

Injustice 2 is available now on Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
