FEATURE: Five More Female DC Characters Who Should Get a Movie

So far, there have been very few female-led comic book movies, from both Marvel and DC. However, that’s about to change, as DC Films’ Wonder Woman is about to hit theaters. DC is also planning a Wonder Woman sequel, as well as films starring Batgirl and the Gotham City Sirens. At other studios, Marvel is producing Captain Marvel and an Ant-Man sequel co-starring Wasp, while Sony is developing a movie starring Spider-Man characters Black Cat and Silver Sable.

But why stop there? There are so many female heroes and villains, especially in the DC Universe, who are more than capable of headlining a solo movie. Below, I’ve compiled a list of five female characters from the DCU who should get their own film.

Black Canary
Black Canary is one of the most prominent supporting characters in Green Arrow’s cast, but she is just as interesting as a solo character. Throughout her history, Dinah Laurel Lance has been a martial artist, a metahuman, and even the lead singer of a rock band. She’s a great character, and it’d be awesome to see her headline her own movie.
A couple years ago, Black Canary was rumored to appear in the Justice League movie, while Birds of Prey has been a frequently suggested addition to the DCEU slate by fans. With Batgirl getting her own movie, one idea is to establish her and Canary in their own movies, before bringing them together in Birds of Prey. But either way, it’s time for Dinah to get her due on the big screen, especially with some fans being disappointed in DC’s television version(s) of the character.
Supergirl
Kara Zor-El is the cousin of Superman, and she is one of the few remaining survivors of the planet Krypton. Since arriving on Earth, Kara has become a hero in her own right, assuming the mantle of Supergirl. Supergirl has gone on to become one of DC’s most prominent female superheroes. So, it would make sense for a movie to happen eventually. (There was a Supergirl movie in the 1980s, but the less said about it, the better.)
Kara starred in a Man of Steel prequel comic, while her pod is briefly seen in the actual movie. So, she’s definitely out there somewhere in the DCEU. It would make sense to bring Kara in to Man of Steel 2 before spinning her off into her own film. Hopefully, the Supergirl television show wouldn’t prevent this from happening. (Although, it’ll be a challenge to find someone as perfect for the role as Melissa Benoist. Good luck, WB.)
Batwoman
Katherine Kane is one of many members of the “Bat Family,” a group of vigilantes working in Gotham City alongside Batman. In recent years, Batwoman has emerged as one of DC’s most prominent LGBT characters, and she currently has a large fan following. So, why not bring Batwoman to the big screen?
Warner Bros. has been developing several Batman-centric spin-offs for the DCEU. These include Nightwing, Batgirl and Gotham City Sirens. Even Suicide Squad has many Batman characters. Batwoman would be a good next step for this slate. Also, there has yet to be a major superhero movie starring an LGBT character. That can all change with Batwoman.
Hawkgirl
Hawkgirl is one of the original female superheroes, debuting all the way back in 1940. The original Hawkgirl was Shiera Hall, while Kendra Saunders assumed the mantle later on. Hawkgirl has been adapted outside of comics several times. Most prominently, she was a founding member in the Justice League animated series, while she was a main character on the first season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Hawkgirl is a great character who should absolutely join the DCEU.
The aforementioned Man of Steel prequel comic actually namedropped the planet Thanagar, home to Hawkgirl and more. So, Thanagarians do exist in the DCEU somewhere. Hawkgirl’s big screen debut could also lead to the introduction of her love interest, Hawkman, sooner or later. Whether it’s Hall or Saunders, a Hawkgirl movie would be very cool to see, if done right.
Catwoman
Technically, a Catwoman movie was already released by WB back in 2004, but we don’t talk about that one. I’m talking about a proper movie starring Selina Kyle herself. Kyle has been a key player in Batman’s history, including several movies. She has to appear in the DCEU sooner or later, so why not give her a standalone film?
Catwoman is a frequent member of the Gotham City Sirens, so expect her to be in that movie. But after Sirens, have Kyle headline her own spin-off. It would further explore her solo adventures in Gotham City (and beyond?), while it can be a vehicle to introduce other Batman-related characters. Again, several films based on Batman characters are already in the works, and assuming WB wants to add more, Catwoman is one of the most obvious options.
Honorable Mentions: Huntress, Zatanna, Vixen, Harley Quinn, Superwoman
