THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Comments on His Love for the “Powerful” Character

A couple months ago, Warner Bros. confirmed that Matt Reeves will be directing The Batman, taking over from star Ben Affleck. While unconfirmed, it is expected that the film’s script – previously written by Affleck, Geoff Johns, and Chris Terrio – may undergo additional changes to better suit Reeves’ vision. Now, the filmmaker has shed some light on exactly why he was drawn to this character in the first place.

Speaking with LA Daily News, Reeves admits that he hasn’t fully finalized his approach to Batman yet, due to his post-production work on War for the Planet of the Apes. But he says that, as a child, the two franchises he was most connected to were – ironically enough – Batman and Planet of the Apes. He also calls Batman a “powerful” character, comparing him to Apes‘ Caesar.

Regarding the big draw of Batman, Reeves says, “I just was obsessed with Batman when I was a kid. What I find so interesting about him as a character is that, as far a superhero goes, he’s not superhuman, he is a person. And he is a tortured soul who is grappling with his past and trying to find a way to be in a world that has a lot that’s wrong with it and trying to find a way to reconcile all of that.”

It sounds like Reeves has a clear passion and understanding for Batman, so his cinematic approach should be something else.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it.

The Batman is expected to begin production sometime next year, presumably for a 2019 release.
