Warner Bros. Developing BATGIRL Movie from Joss Whedon

This year, Warner Bros. has already added several films to its DC development slate. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is getting his own movie, while The LEGO Batman Movie‘s Chris McKay is tackling Nightwing. Now, another key Batman supporting character is coming to the big screen, and the studio has found a big name to do it.

According to Variety, Joss Whedon is nearing a deal to direct, write and produce a film starring Batgirl. The movie, which was conceived within the last month, is being overseen by Geoff Johns, Jon Berg, and Toby Emmerich. Entertainment Weekly adds that Batgirl will (obviously) star Barbara Gordon, and the film is inspired by Gail Simone’s New 52 run. The movie is also expected to feature other characters from Gotham City.

Whedon, of course, is no stranger to the world of superheroes. He wrote and directed Marvel’s two Avengers movies, which grossed a combined $2.9 billion worldwide. His other credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. In fact, back in 2005, Whedon was attached to write and direct a Wonder Woman movie, but that never came to be.

Batgirl is the latest female-led project from DC Films. Wonder Woman hits theaters this summer, and that character plays a key role in Justice League. Also, Harley Quinn and a team of other female villains will unite in Gotham City Sirens.
