NIGHTWING Movie from LEGO BATMAN Director Enters Development at Warner Bros.

Given the presence of an older Batman in the DC Extended Universe, fans have widely expected that Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing and formerly Robin, is somewhere in this universe. There is a Robin suit in the Batcave that honors a fallen comrade, but that Robin is almost definitely Jason Todd.

Now, Nightwing is finally joining the DCEU. Not only that, he’s getting his very own movie.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Warner Bros. has put a Nightwing movie into development, and Chris McKay, who recently directed the wildly successful The LEGO Batman Movie, is in talks to direct. (McKay shared the news on Twitter, so is it still only in the negotiations phase, or is it now a done deal?) The film serves as his first live action directorial effort. Meanwhile, The Accountant‘s Bill Dubuque is writing the script.

It’s unclear if Nightwing is expected to appear in a DCEU film outside of this movie, or where exactly it fits into the timeline. Though, it would make sense for him to appear in The Batman.

Dick Grayson previously appeared in 1995’s Batman Forever and 1997’s Batman & Robin. However, he never evolved into Nightwing in those movies. So, Nightwing will serve as the persona’s live action debut. He was also expected to star in a Titans television pilot, but after TNT passed, that appears to be dead. Plus: McKay has already tackled Dick Grayson on film with The LEGO Batman Movie.
