AQUAMAN Movie Finds its Black Manta; Nicole Kidman in Talks to Join

As we gear up for the beginning of production on Aquaman later this year, the film is in the process of casting its supporting characters. Today, we have word of two actors who are in talks to play key supporting players in the DC film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Get Down star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has entered negotiations to play Black Manta. This confirms last year's report that the iconic Aquaman villain is in the movie. While a deal hasn't been closed, director James Wan recently decided on Abdul-Mateen after meeting with several other actors. Black Manta is the second villain confirmed for Aquaman, following Patrick Wilson's Orm.

In other news, Aquaman may add another A-lister to its cast. THRalso says that Nicole Kidman is in early talks to play the mother of Aquaman and Orm in the film. Traditionally, Aquaman's mother is Atlanna, the Queen of Atlantis. If a deal closes, then this marks Kidman's second DC movie role; she played Chase Meridian i…

Ben Affleck Won't Direct THE BATMAN After All

For the past couple years, Ben Affleck has been attached to direct his own solo Batman movie, which he will also star in. The project is tentatively titled The Batman, and he is co-writing the script with Geoff Johns. But in recent weeks, Affleck has repeatedly discusses his involvement during press junkets, and the excessive attention clearly put pressure on him.

Now, the movie needs a new director. Varietyhas confirmed that Affleck has stepped down as director of The Batman. This decision follows discussions between Affleck and Warner Bros. on how to make the best movie they can. However, Affleck is still on board to star in and produce the film.

Affleck says the following in a statement. "There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a …

BLACK LIGHTNING Pilot to Begin Production in March

Last fall, it was announced that Fox has picked up a pilot for Black Lightning, the latest television project from DC Entertainment. Husband-wife duo Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil are developing the pilot, with Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti helping them bring their vision to life. Now, we know when production begins.

According to My Entertainment World(via Omega Underground), the Black Lightning pilot will start shooting in March. Production will take place in New Orleans. With a start date in place, casting for Black Lightning and other characters should be announced within the coming weeks.

Black Lightning stars Jefferson Pierce, who retired as the titular vigilante years ago. But with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, Pierce will once again don the suit.
Additionally, Berlanti recently confirmed that Black Lightning will be separate from The CW's Arrowverse, which currently consists of four shows and three animated shows…

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE Tracking for $50 Million+ Opening Weekend

We're only two weeks away from the release of Warner Bros.' The LEGO Batman Movie, the highly anticipated spin-off from The LEGO Movie. The new film opens on a crowded weekend, as it has to face sequels Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick: Chapter 2 for the top spot. If early tracking is any indication, then Batman should have no problem staying on top.

According to Deadline, The LEGO Batman Movie is expected to open with more than $50 million in its opening weekend. This puts it ahead of Fifty Shades' $30-42M and John Wick's $20M expectations.

For comparison's sake, The LEGO Movie grossed $69M in its opening weekend back in 2014. It wound up grossing $257.8M domestically and $469.2M worldwide on a $60M budget. The budget for LEGO Batman is unknown, but it should have no trouble making big money. It comes out in the same release slot as the first movie, which is also universally loved by just about anybody. That type of word-of-mouth can only benefit future films.

Marc Guggenheim Teases More Arrowverse Crossovers This Season; Black Flash Confirmed for LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

Following last fall's historic four-show crossover event, The CW will continue to have smaller crossovers with its DC shows in the second half of the year. Supergirl and The Flash will have a musical crossover episode in the spring, while several characters, such as Malcolm Merlyn and Laurel Lance, are series regulars across all of the shows.

Now, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow producer Marc Guggenheim teases even more crossovers. Speaking with Entertainment Weeklyon the "Superhero Insider" SiriusXM radio show, Guggenheim discusses what's coming up this season. He says that next week's Arrow will feature the "fastest" Flash crossover ever, while other Arrowverse characters are being lined up to appear in the last two episodes of Legends. "We, just yesterday, made an offer to an actor to reprise their role from one of the other shows in the season finale of Legends. Oh, and in the penultimate episode we’re gonna have - I can’t be specific about this…

THE FLASH Movie Hires a New Screenwriter

Last year, development on DC Films' The Flash hit a stumbling block with the departure of director Rick Famuyiwa. The filmmaker exited the project over "creative differences," resulting in a delay in production and likely release. Since then, we haven't gotten a lot of updates on this movie. But now, a script rewrite is underway.

According to Variety, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword scribe Joby Harold is doing a page-one rewrite on The Flash. Warner Bros. has apparently been taking its time with finding a new director, and star Ezra Miller is prepping to shoot the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel this year. In the meantime, a new writer has been hired to take the script in a "different" direction.

Seth Grahame-Smith originally wrote the script back when he was attached to direct. After Famuyiwa replaced him, the Dope director rewrote it. However, his script clashed with WB's desired vision for the film, hence the creative differences.

Zack Snyder Teases Superman's "Big" Role in JUSTICE LEAGUE As Another New Still Releases

While we're waiting for that trailer and for the marketing campaign to formally kick off, we have some more tidbits on DC Films' Justice League. The superhero ensemble is featured in the latest issue of Empire Magazine, and included in the coverage is another new still. This image features the team - minus Superman and Aquaman - standing side by side, looking at...something/someone.

Of course, Superman died at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. So while his resurrection has been confirmed for Justice League, details on his exact role have been under wraps. We saw him in the first group photo, but he never popped up in the Comic-Con reel.

Director Zack Snyder addresses Superman's role in the film, both on screen and off. "Superman does play a big part in this movie. His presence, and lack of presence, are big story points..."

For more on Justice League, pick up the new issue of Empire Magazine later this week.

Justice League is scheduled to hit theater…

SUICIDE SQUAD Has Been Nominated for an Oscar

Traditionally, comic book movies don't get a lot of attention at the Academy Awards. There may be the occasional nomination in a minor category, such as Best Visual Effects or Sound Editing. Of course, the big exception to this trend is Heath Ledger's posthumous Oscar for his performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

This year, one of DC's 2016 films is up for an Oscar, but again, it's not a huge category. Suicide Squad has been nominated for the "Best Makeup and Hairstyling" award. Makeup artists and hairstylists Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini and Christopher Nelson are credited in the nomination. The other nominees for this award are Star Trek Beyond and A Man Called Ove.

This marks the first time that a film from the DC Extended Universe was nominated for an Oscar. Neither Man of Steel nor Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice picked up any nominations.

INJUSTICE 2 News Bits: Robin Gameplay and More Gear Details

During Nether Realm's  Watchtower live stream (via Twitch), they gave us new details on their highly anticipated game Injustice 2.  They also showed of a brand new gameplay trailer showing off Robin (Damian Wayne). Check it out below!
One of the things we learned was that Injustice 2 wasn't going feature any returning DLC characters from the previous game (sorry Batgirl and Martian Manhunter fans). Though they did assure fans that this new roster will be just as fun. Also adding that we might see them again in the future. Injustice 2 has the biggest roster Nether Realm has ever done. Each returning character comes with new super moves, and special gear. Making things feel fresh and new. Hopefully we'll see the other characters in a future game.
We also got an in depth look at how the gear system works (you can watch that here). One of the biggest things Nether Realm wanted to add was customization. The ability to make your own Batman is definitely an intriguing concept. O…

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Gets a Bunch of Razzie Nominations for Some Reason

While Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has a dedicated fanbase (myself included), there are also plenty of people who aren't so fond of it. The majority of film critics hated it, while the general audience had a lukewarm response.

So, I guess it shouldn't be too surprising that the movie has a presence at this year's Annual Golden Raspberry (Razzies) awards. But what is surprising is just how many nominations it has. For the 37th Razzie Nominations, Batman v Superman has received a whopping eight nominations, second only to Zoolander No. 2's nine.

BvS - which is called a "WTF comic book battle-royale" - is up for Worst Picture; Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel; and Worst Screenplay. Meanwhile, Zack Snyder is nominated for Worst Director, while both Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill are up for Worst Actor. Affleck and his "BFF (Baddest Foe Ever)," Cavill, are also up for the Worst Screen Combo award. And Jesse Eisenberg is nominated for Worst Su…

SUICIDE SQUAD Director David Ayer Reflects on What He Would Have Done Differently

DC Films' Suicide Squad was one of the highest grossing movies of 2016, making a whopping $745.6 million worldwide. Despite the commercial success, the film received negative reviews from critics and polarized fans. Common complaints include the messy script, unfocused storyline, and the horrible Enchantress.

Now that the movie has come and gone, what does writer-director David Ayer think? Replying to a fan on Twitter, Ayer acknowledged the controversy that Suicide Squad spawned, while also addressing the negative reviews, the movie's flaws, and more.

Most interestingly, Ayer reflects on what he would have done differently if he went back in time and made the movie all over again. He says that he would have The Joker the main antagonist, instead of Enchantress. Also, he would have created a more grounded storyline. You can read Ayer's full comments below. — David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) January 21, 2017
