SUPERGIRL's James Olsen Will Suit Up as Guardian Later This Season

Supergirl made its second season premiere on The CW last night, and it was a strong beginning to the new year. Later this season, we'll meet new characters such as Miss Martian, Maggie Sawyer and Snapper Carr. But on a surprising note, Jimmy James Olsen will take on the mantle of a DC Comics superhero.

At a press screening today (via Entertainment Weekly), it was announced that James will become Guardian on Supergirl later this season. This is a pretty big development for the character, but it turns out that being a photographer isn't enough. Oh, and Winn will be assisting him in this vigilante journey.

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg explains, "James is going to decide that he can no longer sit back and be a sidekick, so he’s going to decide to become a vigilante and he’s going to become Guardian - complete with the shield - which is going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara, because he has decided not to tell her."

In DC Comics lore, the Guardian name was adopted by three characters: Jim Harper (who actually appeared in an episode of Supergirl last season), Mal Duncan and Jake Jordan. Jimmy Olsen never took up the mantle in the comics.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it. Are you excited to see James Olsen become Guardian on Supergirl?
