The Watchtower of Babel News Crew Weighs In on SUICIDE SQUAD

The latest installment in the DC Extended Universe, Suicide Squad, has finally hit theaters. Despite very negative reviews from critics, the film has been successful at the box office so far, receiving the biggest August opening weekend in movie history. Fans have been more positive on the movie, while the general audience seem to be enjoying it.

Today, some members of the Watchtower of Babel News writing staff have decided to share our individual thoughts on Suicide Squad. What did we think of the film? You can find out below.

  • Suicide Squad is a solid entry in the DC Extended Universe. It’s probably my least favorite installment to date, and it’s not quite the game-changer that we expected, but I had a lot of fun and was invested in the characters. The cast is great, the action is dazzling, and the world-building was awesome. However, the plot is generic and at times unfocused, while the main antagonist is mediocre. But if you can overlook that, then you should definitely check out Suicide Squad. 4/5Paul [Full Review]
  • Suicide Squad is a fun, fast-paced addition to the DCEU. The Squad are all well cast, as they’re all memorable (save for Slipknot of course) in their own way, and it was kinda neat to root for the “bad guys” for once. The music, primarily consisting of recognizable rock and rap hits (with some original music thrown in there too) helps give the film an extra layer of personality. Unfortunately, the story is pretty clumsily constructed, and the villain is completely worthless. It ends up being slightly inferior to Batman v Superman for me, but I still had a good time at the cinema! 3.5/5 John
  • Stuffed with far too many characters for its own good and littered with obnoxious pop songs only to attract the teenage demographic, Suicide Squad is the biggest disappointment of the DCEU thus far. The most glaring flaw is sloppy editing, with the first act feeling like a set of short films barely strung together, but this is far from the only problem. Despite promising a fresh take on the superhero genre, the film ends up falling victim to convention/formula, and most ironically for a film about supervillains, has an antagonist awful beyond words. 4/10 Devin
  • We’re three films in and I still don’t know what to make of the DC Extended Universe. Suicide Squad doesn’t add much to this universe. It’s fun at times, but the editing in this film is too distracting. At times it feels like a music video instead of a film, but the characters are enjoyable. That’s the film’s strongest point, the characters. Suicide Squad is just good enough to keep the DCEU alive. So now we wait to see if Wonder Woman is the film that knocks it out of the park. Michael
  • I liked Suicide Squad a lot (7.5/8 of 10 to put a number on it) but I’m not sure how well it will hold up under repeat viewings going into the future. It’s funny that it’s been linked to Guardians of the Galaxy so tightly because, like that movie, while I walked out of the theater satisfied I’m not too sure I need to see any of these characters again. Unlike GotG, the formula of Suicide Squad could use that to its advantage by rotating cast in and out. I would like to see a lot of new people in the sequel. Jason
