David Ayer Explains SUICIDE SQUAD’s Mid-Credits Scene

Suicide Squad is the first installment of the DC Extended Universe to have a mid-credits scene. Like those found in a Marvel Studios or X-Men movie, this mid-credits clip further connects the film to the greater DCEU, and it offers some intriguing hints for the future.

In an interview with USA Today, Suicide Squad writer-director David Ayer discusses this scene. He explains his intention for the scene, as well as his excitement to work with you-know-who.

Warning: The Following Contains MAJOR SPOILERS From Suicide Squad.

So, in Suicide Squad‘s mid-credits scene, Amanda Waller meets with none other than Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) in the aftermath of Enchantress’ assault on Midway City. Wayne agrees to keep the situation under wraps, and in return, Waller gives him files on metahumans – including Flash and Aquaman. The scene ends with Wayne telling Waller to shut down the Suicide Squad, “…or my friends and I will shut it down for you.” So, Justice League vs. Suicide Squad down the road? That has yet to be confirmed, of course.

David Ayer talks here about depicting the classic dynamic between Bruce Wayne and Amanda Waller (described as an “ecology of power”). Essentially, he wanted to take advantage of the fact that Suicide Squad exists in a greater DC movie universe, where the same characters and actors can pop up in many different films. “There are a lot of dynamics and that’s what’s so fun,” Ayer says. “If you go back to comic books, all the characters interact and cross paths at some point. It’s like a wild cocktail party and that’s the feeling I wanted for this, that anybody could show up.”

Ayer also was excited to work with Affleck in the role of Wayne, citing his “presence” and the director’s love of Batman lore. “When I was a child, I read Batman comics and connected with Bruce Wayne, so it was an honor to have Ben there playing that role.” While the DC movies have been very polarizing among fans and audiences, most seem to agree that Affleck is one of the best parts of the mega-franchise so far. And rightfully so.
