CW Seed Announces New Animated DC Show, FREEDOM FIGHTERS: THE RAY

In addition to the four live action shows, The CW has an animated DC series, Vixen, on the CW Seed app. Now, a second show for the format has been announced, further expanding the universe created by Arrow.

At TCA 2016 today (via TV Line), The CW unveiled a new animated series –  Freedom Fighters: The Ray, based on the DC Comics hero of the same name. The show marks the first show to star a gay superhero. It is executive produced by Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim. The series will premiere on CW Seed sometime in 2017.

Like Vixen before him, The Ray is expected to pop up in one of The CW’s live action DC shows after his animated series. The unnamed voice actor should also reprise the role in live action.

Below is a plot summary for Freedom Fighters: The Ray. Stay tuned for more news as we have it.

Raymond “Ray” Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction. But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a “genetic light bomb.” The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice — he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.
