SUICIDE SQUAD on Track for Big $125 Million Opening Weekend

Over the past year, Suicide Squad has generated plenty of hype and anticipation. This is thanks to a strong marketing campaign, a unique concept for a comic book movie, and a stellar A-list cast. So, it’s no surprise that the film is on track for a big opening weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Suicide Squad is on track to open with a huge $125 million over the August 5th weekend. While it’s still early days, some box office analysts are expecting the number to reach $135 million. If the tracking holds, the DC film will surpass Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy ($94.3 million) for the biggest August opening weekend ever.

An opening of $125-135 million would also give Suicide Squad the second biggest opening weekend for the DC Extended Universe, passing Man of Steel‘s $116.6 million debut back in 2013. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opened earlier this year to $166 million, the biggest March debut ever.

Of course, word-of-mouth will play a key role in Suicide Squad‘s opening weekend gross, as well as the remainder of the film’s theatrical run. Hopefully, the movie will be fueled by positive reviews – not only from the critics, but from the general audience.

Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters August 5th. The third installment in the DC Extended Universe stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Jay Hernandez and Karen Fukahara. David Ayer writes and directs.
