SUICIDE SQUAD Director David Ayer Teases Batman’s Role and Possibilities for More Films

Last year, it was confirmed that Ben Affleck’s Batman will appear in the Suicide Squad movie. Since then, we’ve seen glimpses of him in the marketing, but the exact nature of his role – clearly more than a mere cameo – is unknown. Now, writer-director David Ayer sheds some light.

Collider spoke with Ayer on the set of Suicide Squad last year, and during the interview, he talks about Batman. He says that the Dark Knight’s role stems from his connections to many of the Squad members, including Joker, Harley Quinn and Deadshot. So, it would make sense to include Batman in some capacity.

Despite Warner Bros.’ love for Batman, it wasn’t the studio’s call to put him in Suicide Squad. That idea came directly from Ayer himself, who “begged” to include him. “That was really, really something I wanted,” he says, “There’s a lot of information out there, a lot of false information about how these characters play into the A plot. It’s an incredibly complex story with flashbacks and different convergent storylines and things like that.”

Ayer then explains how Batman fits into Suicide Squad‘s story, saying that for the first time in movie history, we’re seeing him from the villains’ point-of-view. “All the Batman movies have been from Batman’s point of view. He’s the good guy. He’s the hero of his own movie in all the movies we’ve seen. If you look at what Bruce Wayne has done in creating the Batman persona, his idea was to terrorize criminals. It’s sort of psychological warfare against criminals. This wraith that comes in the night and attacks and pulls criminals from society. For the first time, we’re seeing Batman from the point of view of the criminals and he’s freaking scary.”

A couple months ago, it was rumored that WB was considering multiple Suicide Squad spin-offs, should the film be a success. The studio recently put a female ensemble movie starring Harley Quinn into development, while spin-offs for Joker and Boomerang were suggested. Additionally, a direct sequel is said to be in the works.

In another set visit interview – this time with Screen Rant – Ayer weighs in on the potential for Suicide Squad spawning more films. He says that the DC Universe is so “infinite,” countless movies set in this world are possible. The same goes for the Suicide Squad. “Because of the nature of the comic book universe, and the DC Universe, it’s really a fractal. It’s really infinite anyway you could go. Especially the DC Universe, I think is one of the most complex fiction universes, I mean with the Crisis, and pre-Crisis, and the multidimensional nature and all the timelines and everything like that. And each one of these characters could be their own film, you know? The Suicide Squad could be a zillion films.”

The third installment in the DC Extended Universe stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Jay Hernandez and Karen Fukahara.
