FEATURE: Five Ideas for SUICIDE SQUAD Movie Spin-Offs

In addition to a planned sequel, there has been talk of spin-offs from DC Films’ Suicide Squad. Writer-director David Ayer says there’s plenty of potential for “zillions” of other movies spawning from this one. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is expected to star in a female ensemble film, while spin-offs for Joker and Boomerang are rumored to be considered. Obviously, all of this depends on whether the first movie is a box office hit.

Suicide Squad introduces many new villains into the DC Extended Universe, and assuming the film does succeed, audiences will want to see more of them. One way that can be accomplished is by giving some characters their own standalone movies.

Below, I’ve compiled a list of five ideas for Suicide Squad movie spin-offs.

Deadshot
Next to Joker and Harley Quinn, Deadshot is arguably the most anticipated character in Suicide Squad. Played by Will Smith, the fan-favorite assassin is a pretty obvious choice for a spin-off. Warner Bros. will likely want to cash in on Smith’s star power as much as possible, and the actor is more than capable of headlining his own film. Plus, the character has plenty of solo comic books.
Deadshot movie could further explore Floyd Lawton’s past, something that will be at least glimpsed at in Suicide Squad. Maybe such a film could adapt the “Deadshot: Beginnings” story arc, which focuses on his attempts to clean up the violence-infected neighborhood that his daughter lives in. There’s a lot of big screen potential for Deadshot outside of Suicide Squad, so fingers crossed WB emphasizes on it.

The Joker
Jared Leto’s Joker has been a hot topic of discussion for Suicide Squad, ranging from the actor’s method acting to his unusual gifts to those tattoos. However, Leto is expected to deliver a strong performance as the Clown Prince of Crime. One way that he can return outside of a Suicide Squad or Batman film is by giving him his own film.
For story options, a Joker movie could adapt the 2008 solo graphic novel. It would be interesting to see a film told entirely from Joker’s point of view. Another idea is to explore his origin within the DC Extended Universe, but that is expected to be shown in Suicide Squad anyways. Regardless, if Leto’s Joker lives up to the hype, then WB will likely want to exploit that as much as possible. Enter a solo spin-off.

Katana
Karen Fukuhara is making her feature film acting debut in Suicide Squad as Katana, a martial artist who wields the Soultaker sword. In the comics, the character is known to be a member of groups such as the Outsiders, the Birds of Prey and even the Justice League. Katana is a great character who would be an ideal choice for a Suicide Squad spin-off.
A Katana movie would theoretically explore Tatsu Yamashiro’s past, including the death of her husband. Suicide Squad is told from the villains’ point of view, so seeing Katana’s more heroic side take center in a film would be good. Plus, it would great to finally see a comic book movie starring an Asian-American superheroine.

Enchantress/Justice League Dark
A Justice League Dark movie has been in development for a while. Last we heard, some actors were being approached to star, while a couple of directors were in contention to replace Guillermo del Toro. Assuming that the film is still happening, one way it can connect to the greater DCEU is via Suicide Squad‘s Enchantress.
Enchantress (played by Cara Delevingne) plays a crucial role in the introduction of magic in the DCEU. A Justice League Dark film could build upon that and expand this side of the universe. They can even bring Enchantress back, possibly as that movie’s main villain. She can serve as the biggest connection between the two worlds, and it would be wise for WB to utilize that.

Secret Six
The Secret Six is another supervillain team in the DC Universe. Each team has six members, and one of them is the mysterious Mockingbird, who is assumed to be one of the six. For the DCEU, it would be interesting to see such a team act as a follow-up to the Suicide Squad.
Deadshot is a frequent member of the Secret Six, so if he doesn’t get a solo spin-off, then maybe he can headline a Secret Six film. Other members from the comics include Bane, King Shark and even Harley Quinn. A Secret Six movie could build upon what Suicide Squad started in exploring the villains’ side of the DCEU.
