LEGENDS OF TOMORROW: Greg Berlanti Explains [SPOILER]’s Exit and Their Future in the DC TV Universe

Last night was the premiere of the penultimate episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, with the season finale airing next week. During this episode, shocking revelations were revealed, while the stage is set for the final showdown with Vandal Savage. Most importantly, however, a member of the crew made the ultimate sacrifice.

In the aftermath of this stunning development, Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Greg Berlanti explains why this character was killed off, but that doesn’t mean they’re gone forever in this universe.

[Warning: The Following Contains MAJOR SPOILERS From The Last Episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. If You Haven’t Seen The Episode Yet, Turn Away Now.]
So, in the last episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Leonard Snart/Captain Cold sacrifices himself to destroy the Oculus, a device used by the Time Masters to control the Legends’ futures. It served as the conclusion of the character’s arc for the show, as Snart evolved from a villain into a hero.
So, actor Wentworth Miller will not be a series regular for Legends of Tomorrow‘s second season. However, as is the case for many characters on these shows, death is not the end for Snart. According to Deadline, Miller has signed a new contract that will allow him to recur as Snart on all of Greg Berlanti’s DC shows, specifically Legends and The Flash. This gives Miller more flexibility in his schedule, and this is the first contract of its kind for the DC TV Universe.

Berlanti explains to Deadline that due to Miller’s short-term contract on Legends, the creative team knew that Captain Cold wasn’t going to be a permanent member of the Waverider crew. So while Snart “…won’t be part of the team of Legends on board of The Waverider next year, he will have a very active role on the show.”

Legends of Tomorrow deals heavily with time travel and alternate timelines in pretty much every episode, which could explain how Snart could pop up on the show again without his death being undone. Additionally, The Flash has been focusing on the Multiverse this season, with infinite doppelgangers of every character. So theoretically, it’s possible we could see a Snart from another Earth next season.

Either way, even though Snart is now dead, we haven’t seen the last of him in the DC TV Universe. Far from it, in fact.
