Geoff Johns and Jon Berg Hired to Co-Run DC Films for Warner Bros.

Following the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. is making a few changes to its approach to DC Films. The movie received mostly negative reviews from critics, while fans and the general audience are mixed. It has also grossed about $870 million worldwide; that’s a lot of money, but WB surely expected more.

So, what is the studio’s response?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, WB has hired DC Entertainment’s Geoff Johns and studio executive vice president Jon Berg have been hired to co-run DC Films, a new division dedicated to the DC Extended Universe. The move is one of several executive changes in the studio, with certain executives being hired to oversee certain genres and franchises. In the case of DC, it’s Johns and Berg.

Berg and Johns have already been involved with the DCEU. The latter has also been heavily involved with DC’s television shows and has written many comic books for the company. Now, he’s putting more focus on the films. The two will become producers on Justice League as a result of the hire.

In this latest move, Warner Bros. wants to combine an experienced film executive (Berg) with a comic book veteran (Johns) to create a unifying division for DC Films. This is compared to Kevin Feige’s role as president of Marvel Studios. However, WB still wants to keep the franchise “filmmaker-driven.”

Additionally, THR says that Johns’ role in DC Films increased with Suicide Squad. That film recently underwent “major” reshoots, in an attempt to smooth out the third act and to, well, make the movie better. Johns is involved in the post-production stage of the film.

Plus, THR reaffirms that Seth Grahame-Smith’s exit from The Flash is because WB wants a more experienced director. Post-Batman v Superman, the studio didn’t think a first-time director doing a big movie ($150 million+ budget) was worth the risk. So, WB wants to find a filmmaker who can handle the big production AND provide his or her own stamp on the product.

So, Warner Bros. is making some changes to improve the DCEU. Hopefully, this move will be beneficial to the franchise and result in a slew of high-quality films. Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
