J.K. Simmons Says He Has a “Very Small” Role in JUSTICE LEAGUE

In an interview with DP/30 (transcription via Comic Book), J.K. Simmons talks more about his role as Commissioner James Gordon in Justice League. While the DC superhero epic began production a few weeks ago, Simmons reaffirms that he doesn’t start shooting until June.

The Oscar winner also reveals that he only has a “very small” in Justice League. This makes sense, given how the movie has to focus on its heroes (there’s at least six of them), the villain(s), and any other supporting characters. However, Simmons implies that we’ll be seeing plenty more of Gordon in future DC movies. “I’m going into a thing that hopefully will be 2, 3, 4, maybe more movies for me, and my part in the first one is really very small.”

Simmons then rehashes past comments about researching the comics, and how he’s planning to deliver his own take on Gordon. “But obviously, we know who the guy is. We know his whole backstory, based on the comic book. So, I’m just gonna finish doing my research on that. And probably not watch the other actors who have played the part, because that is kind of intimidating, honestly, and I don’t think I would find that to be productive. So, I’ll do my take.”

Based on Simmons’ comments here, I think it’s a given that his Gordon will return in Ben Affleck’s Batman movie. And if that film gets sequels, then Gordon could be in those as well. Also, will Simmons return for 2019’s Justice League Part Two? We’ll have to wait and see.

Justice League Part One is scheduled to hit theaters November 17th, 2017. The fifth installment in the DC Extended Universe stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Amber Heard, Joe Morton, Willem Dafoe and J.K. Simmons. Zack Snyder directs from a script by Chris Terrio.
