Gary Oldman Weighs in on J.K. Simmons Playing the Next Commissioner Gordon

A few weeks ago, it was reported that J.K. Simmons was cast as Commissioner James Gordon in 2017’s Justice League, which begins shooting tomorrow. The Batman supporting character was last played by Gary Oldman in The Dark Knight Trilogy, delivering what is easily the best cinematic portrayal of Gordon to date. So, no pressure, J.K.

But what does Oldman have to say about Simmons playing the next Gordon? In an interview with Yahoo! Movies, the actor simply says, “God bless him. That’s what I say, yeah.”

Sharing his thoughts on the character overall, Oldman says, “The thing you’ve just got to get used to with Gordon is he’s a really sound detective, first of all. And he’s really incorruptible, which is a kind of wonderful quality to play and sort of, like, true blue.” Oldman concludes by saying that Gordon is the John Watson to Batman’s Sherlock Holmes.

It will be interesting to see what Simmons brings to this iconic role. Gary Oldman’s portrayal was what made me a huge fan of the character, and it will be tough to top it. But if anyone can do it, it’s Simmons.

Justice League Part One is scheduled to hit theaters November 17th, 2017. The fifth installment in the DC Extended Universe stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Amber Heard and J.K. Simmons. Zack Snyder directs from a script by Chris Terrio.
