UPDATE: BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Scores Biggest Global Opening in Superhero Movie History

This post has been updated with the final numbers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s global opening weekend.

Earlier today, we shared the news that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice grossed an excellent $166.1 million in its opening weekend, the biggest Easter debut in movie history and the sixth highest opening ever. Now, the numbers are in for the movie’s worldwide opening, and we have even more good news.

Internationally, Batman v Superman grossed $254 million from 66 markets. Combine that with the domestic gross, and the movie has a global debut of $420.1 million. This is the biggest worldwide debut of any superhero movie to date. It’s also the fourth biggest global opening, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. A complete list of worldwide openings can be found here.

Additionally, Batman v Superman scored the biggest Warner Bros. opening ever in China, where it grossed $57.3M.

WB distribution executive vice president Jeff Goldstein had this to say to Variety about Batman v Superman‘s success. “Fans around the world have embraced the movie. The beauty of moving our date [from May 2016 to March] is that strategically it allowed us to open up around the world at the same time and in a time frame where there’s not a lot of competition.”

Even with the negative reviews from critics and some fans, Batman v Superman is a big win so far for WB. The studio has been betting big on this film, which will formally launch the DC Extended Universe. And financially, this is a terrific start.

Stay tuned for more updates as we have them.
