UPDATE: BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE Breaks Box Office Records With $166M Opening Weekend

This post has been updated to include the final numbers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s opening weekend.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice finally arrived in theaters this weekend, marking the conclusion of the three-year wait. Warner Bros. has a lot riding on this film; it has a $250M budget, it’s a big event movie, and it is designed to launch a multi-film DC Extended Universe. Fortunately, the movie is off to a fantastic start at the box office.

It has been confirmed (via THR) that Batman v Superman has opened with an estimated $166.1 million this weekend. This marks the biggest opening for both the Easter weekend and the month of March in cinematic history. Additionally, not only is it the highest opening for a DC movie, it is the second biggest Warner Bros. opening ever, behind only 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.2M).

Currently, Batman v Superman boasts the seventh biggest opening weekend of all time. The top five is composed of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, the two Avengers movies and Iron Man 3. A complete list can be found here.

As for the film’s global opening, international numbers aren’t in yet. However, signs are pointing to it having one of the biggest global debuts in history. So, stay tuned for updates on that.

This opening is especially impressive for Batman v Superman considering its reviews. Critics have been largely negative on the DC superhero ensemble; however, fans have been more positive so far. Hopefully, positive word-of-mouth from the general audience will strengthen this movie’s legs.

Stay tuned for more box office news as we have it.
