More Details on ARROW/CONSTANTINE Crossover Episode; Rutina Wesley’s Role Revealed

Yesterday, it was announced that Matt Ryan’s John Constantine will officially return for an episode of Arrow this season, following his NBC series’ cancellation. The crossover will take place in episode five of the show’s fourth season, titled “Haunted.” Following this announcement, TV Insider spoke with executive producer Marc Guggenheim on this decision, and how it ties into the episode’s storyline.

Guggenheim admits that he is very excited about Constantine’s guest star appearance, which he calls a “one-time-only deal.” He adds, “Each year on the show, we have added and expanded the mythology with different elements. In Season 2 we introduced the idea of superpowers, last year brought in the League of Assassins, and for Season 4, we always had a plan to introduce magic and mysticism. We were already swimming in those waters and that’s why Constantine is this great organic little development.”

As for how exactly Constantine ties into the episode, it looks like he will play a role in the story of Sara Lance’s resurrection, thanks to the Lazarus Pit. Guggenheim says, “Unlike Thea, who wasn’t fully dead, the consequences of using the pit on someone as dead as Sara was creates some unforeseen difficulties…and John Constantine is uniquely suited to help our team deal with those.” He adds that Oliver will have already encountered supernatural and mystical elements during his “five years in hell,” and that Diggle has some “choice lines” in response to this one.

Guggenheim goes on to acknowledge the fans’ desire to see John Constantine return, and he thanks DC for allowing this crossover to happen. Also, the Arrow episode will not only see Matt Ryan’s return to the role, but his original wardrobe as well. “The trench coat, the tie, the shirt…the whole wardrobe is being taken out for storage and shipped up to Vancouver.” The show even recruited a director from Constantine, John Badham, to helm this episode. Guggenheim calls it a “wonderful combination,” since Badham is already familiar with Constantine.

In other Arrow news, we now know which character Rutina Wesley is playing this season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the True Blood actress will play Liza Warner, also known as Lady Cop in the comics, for a multi-episode arc. In Arrow, Warner is a member of the anti-vigilante task force.

Stay tuned for more news as we have it. Arrow returns to The CW on October 7th.
