TNT President Offers Update on TITANS; Pilot to be “Very True” to Source Material

It was announced last fall that TNT was developing a television pilot called Titans, which is based on DC Comics’ Teen Titans. The potential series would star Dick Grayson as he evolves into the role of Nightwing. Other characters include Barbara Gordon, Raven, Starfire, Hawk and Dove. Since then, we’ve heard little on the project, with various casting and production rumors being unsubstantiated. But now, we have an official update, and it sounds promising.

At TNT’s Upfronts panel today, president Kevin Reilly acknowledged that there has been quite a wait for Titans, but the hope is that “maybe this summer,” the network will lock down casting and a production start date. He also said this about how the series would stand out from other comic book shows in this day and age. “I sat down with Akiva and said — and he ultimately agreed — that the [TV] landscape right now is well-serviced on the superhero front. So what space is this going to inhabit?”

Reilly promises that Titans will stay “very true” to the acclaimed source material, citing the decades-old mythology. He also reveals new details on Dick Grayson’s role in the pilot and his relationship with Batman. “There were consequences to things that happened; it wasn’t somebody died and they moved on. There was the first superhero to be an addict [in Roy Harper’s Speedy]. It’s a coming-of-age story for Robin, who feels like Batman has betrayed him.” Finally, the TNT president has high hopes for the final product. “I think it’s going to end up being a very, very interesting offering. I think it’s going to be excellent.” Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
