Pierce Brosnan Reflects On Meeting With Tim Burton To Play Batman

Before Michael Keaton was cast as the Dark Knight for 1989's Batman, several high-profile actors were in contention for the coveted role. Among these were Pierce Brosnan, who would later go on to play James Bond in several films. Now, he looks back on his initial meeting to play Batman and why he wasn't sold on the concept.

During a Reddit AMA, Brosnan recalls meeting with director Tim Burton for the role of one of the greatest superheroes of all time. "Yes, I did. I went and met with Tim Burton for the role of Batman. But I just couldn't really take it seriously, any man who wears his underpants outside his pants just cannot be taken seriously. That was my foolish take on it. It was a joke, I thought. But how wrong was I? Don't get me wrong, because I love Batman, and I grew up on Batman. As a kid in Ireland, we used to get our raincoats and tie them round our neck and swing through the bicycle shed..."

Of course, Batman was among the films that made others take the comic book movie genre seriously, and the Dark Knight's costume didn't have underwear outside of its pants. As aforementioned, a slew of A-list actors, such as Mel Gibson and Tom Selleck, were considered for the role of Batman before Michael Keaton was cast. But one can't help but wonder what the franchise would have looked like with Brosnan in the lead. For Brosnan's entire Reddit AMA, click the link above.
