New Extended Trailer Confirms ARROW’s Season 3 Big Bad; Wildcat Set To Appear

DC Entertainment held its big panel for its 2014 television shows last night at Comic-Con, and we got a couple of awesome Arrow tidbits. First up, Season 3 of the hit CW series will feature Ted Grant, aka Wildcat. The character will interact with Laurel. Of course, Grant is known for training Lance in the comics to become the Black Canary, and it is expected that this season will see Laurel come much closer to officially adopting the persona. Arrow marks the character’s second live action appearance after a brief debut on Smallville, and Grant is yet another Justice League member to be introduced in the universe this season.

And now, we have an even bigger reveal. Last night’s panel also aired an extended trailer for Season 3, with a few extra seconds confirming the big bad this year. And yes, it is none other than Ra’s al Ghul, leader of the League of Assassins. This move isn’t the biggest surprise to Arrow fans, since the Demon’s Head has been referenced multiple times in the past. The series also marks the character’s second live action incarnation, following Liam Neeson’s brilliant portrayal in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises. Arrow‘s Ra’s al Ghul has yet to be cast, but his wardrobe is heavily teased in the following trailer.

Additionally, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg talks about al Ghul in an interview with TV Guide“We wanted to present Oliver with a new challenge with a villain that would speak to what Oliver was going through emotionally. This season, Oliver is wrestling with, ‘Is there a life for me beyond being the Arrow?’ What the Season 3 villain comes to Oliver and says is, ‘The reason you’re not fully successful as the Arrow is because you’re holding on to Oliver Queen. I have let go of my identity and embraced my cause and you should do the same.’ It’s a whole new thing where the enemy actually, in some ways, admires the Arrow and what he’s doing. He just thinks that the Arrow is thinking too small.”

With Malcolm Merlyn confirmed to be a series regular this season and al Ghul seeking to kill him, perhaps the Dark Archer will team up with The Arrow? We’ve already established that the Season 3 villain has a strong animosity towards Malcolm. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. It’s going to be a lot of asking, ‘Who hates who more?'” Then there’s the question of how Sara and Nyssa’s relationship will be affected once the Demon’s Head makes his presence felt. Kreisberg says, “Alliances and loyalty are another big theme of the season. There’s another war coming and whose side people are going to be on is going to be the thing that drives the season.”

This is certainly exciting news, and stay tuned for more as we have it. Arrow returns to The CW on October 8th.
