Wonder Woman Origin Series AMAZON Canned By The CW

With The CW’s panel at TCA ongoing, we have another update on one of its planned DC television shows. Or, in this case, one that is no longer in development. After a couple of years in development, the Wonder Woman origin series Amazon is officially dead. CW president Mark Pedowitz tells The Hollywood Reporter, “We did not go forward with it.” However, he’s open to tackling another Wonder Woman project in the future if the script works. “It all depends on the script. We were very careful with Arrow and we’re being very careful with Flash. These are iconic characters so we’re going to be very careful with Wonder Woman. You only get one shot before you get bit.” Amazon was described as a telling of Wonder Woman’s origins, focusing on Diana of Themiscyra before she becomes the iconic heroine (think Smallville).
This is the second failed attempt at a Wonder Woman television series in recent years. In 2011, NBC rejected a pilot starring Adrianne Palicki as Diana Prince. However, the character is finally heading to the big screen, as Gal Gadot will play Wonder Woman in 2015’s Batman vs. Superman. Whether or not that had an effect on Amazon is unknown.
In the meantime, The CW has its plate full with DC shows. In addition to the currently running Arrow, Barry Allen will return in a Flash spin-off pilot/potential series. Hourman is also in development, while the network is planning an adaptation of iZombies. Since The CW’s panel is still ongoing, expect more news to come shortly.
