Warner Bros. Wants Joaquin Phoenix For Main Villain Role (Lex Luthor?) In BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

We have more casting news for Warner Bros.’ Batman vs. Superman movie, and this is easily one of the most exciting reports yet. According to Variety, the studio is looking at none other than Joaquin Phoenix for a role in the film. The exact role hasn’t been confirmed yet, but is said to be that of the main villain, who will likely be Lex Luthor. The actor – who will next be seen in WB’s Her – hasn’t even been offered the part yet. Since he usually turns down big blockbuster roles, it’s very possible that he could turn down this one as well. Phoenix is also considering another film offer right now.
Previous reports had Jason Momoa and Callan Mulvey linked to roles in Batman vs. Superman, with the latter specifically mentioned as being considered for a villain role. However, Variety notes that if one or both of those actors join the cast, it won’t be as the main villain. WB apparently wants a “slam dunk” choice for the role. This move also affirms that the studio wants to cast a major actor as Lex Luthor, and Phoenix would no doubt be a fantastic choice for the role. Stay tuned for more news as we have it.
Batman vs. Superman (not the final title) is scheduled to hit theaters July 17th, 2015. The follow-up to Man of Steel, the next installment in the DC Cinematic Universe stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Diane Lane, and Laurence Fishburne, with Jason Momoa in talks to join. Zack Snyder directs from a script by David S. Goyer.
